在紫禁城皇宫中设置铜缸、铁缸，意图就是用来防火的。这些大缸平时贮满清水，大兴安岭地区故宫铜大缸，宫中一旦火灾，即可就近取水灭火。因此，大缸又被称作“吉祥缸”、“太平缸”。据说，这些大缸还有一个俗称叫“门海”，取门前之大海的意思，祈望门前的“大海”以水克火，宫里不再发生火灾。

故宫铜大缸是明清时期铸造的，由当时清廷内务府营造司管理，按照规定摆放在庭院的宫殿前和后宫的东西长街上，是皇宫中备作消防用以盛水的器皿。这些铜缸大都是铁式青铜制成，也有少的鎏金铜缸。
