香炉种类繁多，不同形状的香炉，供在不同的位置、焚烧不同的香。如大雄宝殿中央或门外丹墀的大香炉，多是铸铜等金属铸造或石雕的，炉身刻有该寺寺名，供信徒插线香之用。大殿供桌上的香炉，有铜、石或瓷质的，用以焚烧檀香。佛寺的大殿都有一个长方形的炉盘，放着一个焚烧檀香的精致小香炉，盘子前垂着刺绣的炉围，很庄严美观，是住持和尚上香专用的；供养佛菩萨的供品中，可分为：香、花、灯、涂（水）、果、茶、食、宝、珠、衣十种，而香在十供养之首，香炉的身份自然也高起来了。许多礼佛的人，不懂烧香的意义，把佛菩萨当神拜，常常燃一大把香插在香炉内，铜香炉都有哪些造型，熏得人泪水直流，甚至香炉起火燃烧；有些人甚至把香炉灰抓回去当灵丹妙药。
