故宫铜大缸又称“吉祥缸”，清朝时期规定为了防止“吉祥缸”内存水的干涸，内廷“吉祥缸”每日由关防衙门内管领率领苏拉（满语，指宫中的差役）近内添水；外朝“吉祥缸”，每日由宫中机桶处苏拉将缸水添足。总管内务府派司员4人负责管理，每5天检查一次缸内的储水情况。

在冬季，为了防止“吉祥缸”的储水结冰，不仅仅要加上缸盖，还要进行“熏缸”的工作具体的做法是，在缸盖里面设有专门的“铁屉”可以贮存炭火；同时，每一口缸不是直接放置在地面上的，而是在缸的底部有弧形的石基垫底，其中有一块弧形石是可以活动的，这样方便在刚下置放火炭，摆放铜缸的寓意和作用，将缸内已经冻结的冰块融化。这项差事一直是有内务府的“熟火处”根据季节气候寒暖变化来决定何时开始，直到一般到第二年的惊蛰过后才结束。
