故宫内的大缸，又称“门海”。按质量可分为铜鎏金吉祥缸、“烧古”青铜缸和铁铸大缸三类。一类为铜鎏金吉祥缸，是比较贵重的，在故宫内的太和殿门前，就陈列着这种鎏金大铜缸，每尊高1.2米，直径1.63米，缸的上部外表面均铭刻着“大清乾隆年造”的字款，大缸的两侧饰有兽面纹铺首环耳。第二类为“烧古”青铜缸，定做故宫铜大缸，全部为清代制造，其外表油墨锃亮，非常雅致，吉林铜大缸，在景运门和隆宗门前各有一对这样的大缸。第三类为明代制造的铁铸大缸，古朴素雅。
