宫中设置大量铜缸的初意图是用来防火的，但其实际存在的价值绝不仅仅局限于消防，同时它还是宫内大殿、庭院中不可或缺的陈列品。清代宫中各处陈设吉祥缸的质地、大小、多少都要随具体的环境而定。鎏金铜缸等级高，因此要设列在皇帝上朝议政的太和殿、保和殿两侧以及用于“御门听政”的乾清门外红墙前边。而在后宫及东西长街，就只能陈设较小的铜缸或铁缸了。
