铸铜水缸摆件故宫的一些大殿前、庭院中，都摆放着一个个大金属缸。这些大缸腹宽口收、装饰精美，两耳处加挂着兽面铜环，气势不凡，容量亦不小。这些大水缸又称“太平缸”或“吉祥缸”。据《大清会典》记载，宫**有大小“太平缸”308口。据说，这些铜制或者铁制的水缸还有一个俗称叫“门海”，取门前之大海的意思，由于故宫的建筑全是木结构的，容易着火，故而祈望门前的“大海”以水克火，以防火灾。
