Cylinder, also known as "Menhai" in Qing Dynasty, is famous for its water like sea to put out fire. In general, we should pay attention to the defense of some harmful chemicals from the outside, such as acids, chlorides, etc. and we must wear cotton gloves when moving the copper cylinder. Do not let your hands directly contact the copper cylinder to prevent the sweat corrosion on your hands. In the Forbidden City, the auspicious cylinder has a large mouth and a copper ring on the animal's face at the two ears, which is thick and spectacular and decorative. According to the material, auspicious jars can be divided into three types: Iron jars, copper jars and gold-plated copper jars. Among them, gold-plated copper jars are high-grade auspicious jars, which are often displayed on both sides of Taihe hall, Baohe hall, as well as on both sides of the red wall outside the Qianqing gate and other important halls or city gates. In addition, the iron jars in the Forbidden City were cast in Ming Dynasty. The copper jars were cast in Ming and Qing Dynasties, while the gold-plated copper jars were all cast in Qing Dynasty.

Beside the courtyard and streets of the Forbidden City, bronze and iron tanks of different sizes are almost permanent furnishings. The palace museum used to have 308 large jars made of copper and iron, 22 of which were made of gilded copper. The functions of these large tanks have multiple meanings. First, they are fire-fighting equipment for water storage and fire prevention. Most of the buildings in the Forbidden City are made of wood, which is most afraid of fire. A long time ago, people came up with a way to place large tanks in front of the door in order to put out the fire in time. As long as the water is filled up frequently, when there is a fire, water can be taken nearby at any time to put out the fire. Beside the tall palace, a large tank full of water is placed to prevent sudden fire. The imperial court attached great importance to these large copper tanks. Every winter, the emperor also ordered people to add drawers and straw curtains on the cylinder head, and put charcoal fire under them to prevent freezing. Secondly, it plays a decorative role in the lofty palaces. The big copper vat with brilliant gold light is set off by the red walls and yellow tiles of the Forbidden City, which is particularly magnificent. In addition, the copper cylinder has the auspicious function of praying and eliminating disasters, also known as "Menhai", "Fuhai", "auspicious cylinder".
